My Family’s Christmas Traditions | Blogmas Day 3

Sunday, 3 December 2017

Over the years my family have acquired quite a few Christmas traditions, some we still do to this day and some we don't. I love the Christmas season because of the traditions we have upheld as a family and the new ones we create each year. I love reading about what other families do during the holiday's, so I thought I'd share some of mine!

Reading 'Twas the Night Before Christmas every Christmas Eve
This is probably one of my favourite books and my dad would read it to me and my brothers every single Christmas Eve just before we went to bed. We stopped doing it a couple of years ago but I think if you have children who believe in Santa, it is such a magical book to read to them.

Going for a long walk around the Lickey Hills on Christmas Eve
The Lickey Hills is a country park in Birmingham and it was J.R.R Tolkien's inspiration for the mythical Shires, where the hobbits lived in his book! I still to this day find it difficult to fall asleep on Christmas Eve, when we were younger my family and some family friends would go for a long walk around the Lickey Hills to try and tire us out. One year it actually snowed quite a bit so we were able to go sledging, it was so magical.

Building a gingerbread house
It wouldn't be Christmas without building a gingerbread house but this year I won't have my trusty companion with me, as he is in Japan. It is such an arduous task but I really enjoy doing it every year, plus it makes an amazing snack afterwards.

Picking out a new bauble
For as long as I can remember me and my family have gone to Webb's garden centre to pick out a new ornament and look at all of the Christmas decorations. I look forward to the day I move out and I can take all of the baubles I chose with me. However, this year we all picked one off of the Disney Store's website!

Picking out a Christmas tree
Up until around 2010 we had always had a fake tree but one year we decided it was time to pick out a real tree. I always have so much fun picking out a real tree and getting everyone to push me around on one of the trolleys. For most years we would get it from Woods Farm Christmas Trees in Solihull, so if you live in the area I'd definitely give it a visit.

Seeing The Polar Express in 3D
We haven't done this for a while but for a good few years we would go and see The Polar Express in 3D every single Christmas, we would always go to the German Market before too. I really miss this tradition but I do still watch the film every single years, just not in 3D.

Looking at the Christmas lights
There's a road in Stourbridge that would go all out with their Christmas lights, most of the houses looked incredible and would even decorate the outside of their house to raise money for charity. I'm not sure if they still do it but we would always go and look at the houses every year.

Going for a Christmas meal at the golf club in Solihull
My grandad and dad were members of this golf club and they would put on a Christmas meal for the families every year. They stopped doing it when I was still young but I have vivid memories from when this was a Christmas tradition.
