My Thoughts on Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout!

Sunday, 31 July 2016

When I woke up on Sunday morning I decided to have a scroll through Twitter and I was greeted by some extremely upset and confused Disney fans. For while now it had been rumored and speculated that Disney California Adventure Tower of Terror would eventually be re-imagined into a Guardians of the Galaxy themed attraction. On Sunday at San Diego Comic Con it was officially announced that the beginning of summer 2017 will see the new attraction come to fruition. Here are my thoughts and opinions on replacing the iconic Tower of Terror.

Tower of Terror is one of my favourite attractions at Disney, I love the concept and all of the detail that has gone into creating it. I think it is incredibly unique in terms of the layout and the story behind it. I had no idea what The Twilight Zone was until I rode Tower of Terror when I went to Walt Disney World but I instantly knew the attraction would soon become one of my favourites. I strongly believe that Disney should continue to make changes to the park, as Walt Disney famously once said "Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in world."

I love Guardians of the Galaxy, I think it is an amazing film and it has the potential to be adapted into an incredible ride but is getting rid of Tower of Terror the best thing to do? To me it just seems slightly random, it's a film that hasn't been out long and the second one has not even been released yet. Which for all we know, could be a complete flop but I highly doubt it. I am really hoping that this change is a decision Disney took a long time to consider. However, something I do not understand is the fact that Disney have released so many amazing films that would benefit from having an attraction based off of them so much more and I'm sure guests and fans would also appreciate that. Films that the Disney community love and cherish, Tangled, Hercules, Beauty and the Beast are just a small example of the films that get pushed aside, which with the right Imagineers could been turned into outstanding attractions. Even so, why replace an iconic ride for a film that has only been out for 2 years? Why not build a completely new attraction for it? I understand that in Anaheim they may not be as blessed with the amount of land they have at Disney World but regardless, I would've loved to see them create a whole new attraction around the film, not recycle one.

It is understandable that there are a lot of people who do not know what The Twilight Zone is but Tower of Terror is still a well loved attraction and it also introduces guests to the incredible TV series that first aired in 1959. The attraction is incredibly well thought out from start to finish, from the waiting areas in line, to the small room you enter in which you watch a short clip where you learn what The Twilight Zone is, to the cast members. Although, the story behind Guardians of the Galaxy - Mission: Breakout! sounds interesting but I'm confused as to how it ties in with the films. Below is a short description of the attraction found on Disney Parks Blog:

"Deep inside his fortress-like collection, the mysterious Taneleer Tivan (aka The Collector) is displaying his newest acquisitions, the Guardians of the Galaxy. They are trapped in customized display cases, suspended over a vast abyss. Unbeknownst to their unscrupulous captor, the intrepid Rocket has escaped and is enlisting the Collector’s VIP guests for help. Guests board a gantry lift, which launches them into a chaotic and hilarious adventure as they join Rocket in an attempt to break his fellow Guardians out of captivity."

Overall, I understand Disney's need to change and introduce new attractions to the parks but my love for Tower of Terror is outweighing my love for Guardians of the Galaxy right now. It seems like an extremely rash decision to be replacing such an iconic ride with a Marvel film that isn't even the most loved of the franchise. That being said, I am looking forward to seeing how the attractions exterior and interior turns out and we can only hope that Disney and its Imagineers have faith in their decision. I am almost certain that this change will only be happening to the Tower of Terror situated at Disney California Adventure and not the other parks.

I found it really difficult trying to put into words how I am feeling about this change, so I hope that my thoughts are somewhat understandable. How do you feel about the announcement of this new attraction?

  1. I've seen the concept art. It's ugly and awkward. It looks like they hastily refitted a California hotel to look dystopian future. What does GOTG have to do with elevators anyway? It's kinda like turning Thunder Mountain into Pod Racing. It'd be forcefully awkward and out of place.
